A New Zealand couple hosted a “safety signs”-themed birthday party for their little boy, who has developed an obsession with all forms of signage.

Three-year-old Gigi Percival fell in love with the signs after a family holiday last year when she first noticed the “seat belt” and “no smoking” signs on the plane. Since then she has been hooked and reads aloud every sign she sees.

So Adam Percival, 33, wasn’t surprised when Gigi said she wanted a “non-smoking cake” for the big day.

‘We thought it was funny and wanted to grant his wishes. Our whole family has a very good sense of humor so everyone went above and beyond!’ Adam told FEMAIL.

Adan and his wife Eva, 34, collected a variety of signs to use as party decorations.

‘In fact my mum found some signs at Bunnings and our next door neighbor who works on roads gave us some signs too. A true community effort!’ he said.

Eve made the “no smoking” cake and then Adam decorated it with red, white and black icing.

Forty people attended the backyard party and guests enjoyed food, snacks and drinks, including a selection of cookies with signs reading “slippery when wet”, “wear your seat belt”, “keep your head above water” and “watch out for children”.

‘Everyone loved it. Gigi ended up with more signs as a birthday present!’ Adam said.

Gigi even has a yellow “wet floor” warning sign in her bedroom and another sign on her door that says “no entry, authorized personnel only.”

On a viral Instagram video which has been viewed over 12.9 million times, Adam asks Gigi what kind of birthday cake she would like and then says “let’s do it.”

Gigi can also be seen pointing to different signs on a door and reads out loud what she sees, including “put on your seat belt.”

The adorable clip quickly caught the attention of the masses and other parents felt the strange obsession that their children were also interested in weird and wonderful objects.

“The bakery must have been very confused,” one laughed.

“My favorite genre is little kids with specific interests and parents who accept that nonsense,” another commented.

‘I love seeing kids wanting random themes for their birthday parties!’ added a third.

Another said the fact that Gigi can read at such a young age is “awesome.”

“Future graphic designer there,” added one more.

Other parents said their children are also obsessed with strange objects.

‘This was my son!! Totally obsessed with signs, ‘STOP’ in particular. I was always printing out coloring sheets and googling posters for him. The car trips were particularly fun,” one mother wrote.

Another said: “I asked my son what he wanted for Christmas and he said scrambled eggs on toast.”

One person added: ‘My four-year-old nephew wanted an airbag for Christmas. ‘His mom bought him a bath pillow and told him it was an airbag and he was excited.’
