Camera captured the terrifying moment a man armed with a hammer allegedly tried to steal a Jeep in broad daylight.

A Nine News crew was on Victoria Street in Richmond, Melbourne, on Monday when a man allegedly began threatening two drivers in their late-model Jeeps.

The images showed the man hitting the two drivers with the hammer before entering one of the vehicles.

However, shortly after, he gets out of the Jeep without being able to start it.

The man then appears to casually walk away before returning to smash the windows of one of the cars.

Victoria Police confirmed a man has been arrested in connection with the incident, but no charges have been laid so far.

A spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia that “one driver was treated at the scene for minor injuries.”

Investigations are ongoing.
