NFL fans were left outraged by a “disgusting decision” by Patrick Mahomes at the end of the Kansas City Chiefs’ win over the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday night.
Entering the game’s final possession, Mahomes had racked up 30 rushing yards, well above the popular betting market for the quarterback to reach at least 19.5 rushing yards.
But with time on the clock that needed to be run out to secure a Chiefs victory, Mahomes had to do some improvisation before officially kneeling so time could expire.
To accomplish this, he knelt again at each of his positions, losing five yards, four yards, and four yards again.
That was enough to end the game, but it also dropped his rushing total from 30 to 17, crushing the hopes of people who had bet money on Mahomes topping 19.5 yards on the night.
NFL fans were furious with Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes on Sunday
Mahomes took his time kneeling, losing 13 yards in the process.
According to BetMGM, 94 percent of its sportsbook’s tickets were betting on the Chiefs quarterback to top 19.5 rushing yards in the game, and many were upset by his decision to give up so many yards at the end.
People began posting statements about his defeats on social media, with many becoming outraged and cursing the quarterback’s name.
One posted: ‘Mahomes o/u on rushing yards 18.5. Him losing 9 yards because I’m three plays in while kneeling to force the under is disgusting. I’m sure the NFL isn’t rigged.’
“I hate this guy so much,” one angry punter wrote on Twitter. “That annoying prick made me lose my $150 for 1.5 rushing yards because of this stupid thing.”
Another user wrote: “I love seeing this kind of stuff and hearing people say that sports are not rigged.”
“I don’t think I’ve ever seen a worse pace than this,” said another user.
“Did Mahomes just take a knee and lose 13 yards? Really?” wrote one user who posted their betting ticket.
‘This is the second time this season I’ve lost a running QB to knee injuries,’ read another post.
Another person said: “There aren’t many mistakes worse than this. 13 yards in three plays? Ouch!”
Oddsmakers and fans were shocked by the quarterback’s decision-making, leading to losing bets.
As for Mahomes himself, the Chiefs quarterback had a decent performance against Atlanta’s defense.
Mahomes completed 26 of 39 passes for 217 yards, two touchdowns and one interception while adding those 17 yards on the ground.
Only four of those completions went to tight end Travis Kelce, who continues to suffer from a slow start this season, leading some to call for him to consider retirement.
Kansas City will take its perfect 3-0 record to Los Angeles when it faces its division rival Chargers next Sunday.
