A mother-of-three has released heartbreaking images of the injuries she suffered at the hands of her ex-boyfriend.
John Paul Wilkinson, 26, stomped on Jodie Beck’s head so hard it looked like her eyes were “bulging out of her head.”
Wilkinson brandished a machete during the vicious attack and threatened “you’re going to die now, love.”
Shockingly, he only received a 30-month sentence after pleading guilty to unintentional grievous bodily harm and possession of a knife.
Now Jodie, 32, from Bradford, West Yorkshire, is speaking out bravely to encourage others who find themselves in an abusive relationship to leave it and seek help.
Jodie Beck, 32, thought she was going to die when her boyfriend hit her so hard her eyes felt like they were going to pop out of her head.
Jodie remained in hospital for two days after the attack as she recovered from her broken nose, fractured cheekbone and severe bruising. Her attacker, John Paul Wilkinson, brandished a machete during the attack. He had been a serial abuser throughout their relationship.
Jodie says she is lucky to have survived the attack and is grateful that her niece and children escaped unharmed.
Jodie said: ‘I want women to know his face and stay away. It will make your life hell.
She said: ‘I thought John Paul was going to kill me that day.
“I’m very lucky to have survived.”
Jodie, an area manager, began dating Wilkinson in 2016.
A former member of the team, he had a reputation for being a bit of a “player.”
A few months later, Jodie became pregnant and Wilkinson promised to support her and the baby.
The couple became official and when their son was born in July of that year, he was a loving father.
But four months later, Wilkinson started staying out late and partying.
Jodie said: ‘He posted videos online of him dancing with girls in nightclubs.
In March 2023, Wilkinson appeared at Bradford Crown Court and pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm without intent and possession of a bladed article, but only received a 30-month sentence.
Jodie fled the house when Wilkinson pulled out a machete and was rescued by a passing car.
Jodie and John Paul (pictured) started dating in 2016 and had two children together.
“Sometimes I didn’t come home for a whole weekend.”
He then began insulting Jodie, telling her that no one would love her because of her stretch marks.
Shortly afterward, during an argument, he slapped her.
Hoping it was a one-time thing, Jodie forgave him.
She said: “He suffered from PTSD, so I put it down to that.”
Wilkinson and Jodie separated several times before the attack, and Jodie endured Wilkinson’s violent outbursts for years.
For years, Jodie endured violent outbursts from Wilkinson.
Then, in November 2019, they welcomed another child.
And two months later, while they were out on a night out together, Wilkinson violently attacked her during an argument.
Jodie ended things and for nine months she was free of his abuse.
Finally, after wearing her down, he reluctantly let Wilkinson back into his life.
“He had a strange control over me and I felt trapped,” he explained.
In October 2022, the couple went out for a night out in a pub, while Jodie’s 18-year-old niece looked after their children.
According to Jodie, Wilkinson was in a good mood and they spent the night dancing.
However, back at home, Wilkinson turned around and lunged at her, hitting her in the back of the head.
As she raised her arms to protect her face, he landed more blows on her.
Jodie recalls: “I fell onto the bed in agony as he continued to hit me.
‘I screamed for help and my niece appeared at the door.
“She tried to stand in front of John Paul to stop him from hurting me, but he dragged her away before putting her in a headlock and throwing her into the closet.”
Wilkinson proceeded to throw Jodie to the ground and stomp on her.
Blood poured from his face and he felt his eyes bulge out of their sockets.
She said: “I heard him say, ‘I’m going to go to jail, you better give me a good beating.’
“I thought, that’s it, I’m going to die.”
Moments later, Wilkinson pulled a machete from behind the bed and said ‘you’re going to die now, love.’
Jodie ran out of the room and out onto the street, while he chased her with his sword.
A passing car stopped and two strangers took her to a nearby house where they called the police.
“The next thing I remember was waking up in Bradford Royal Infirmary with two police officers guarding my door,” he explained.
Fortunately, Jodie’s niece was unharmed and she and the children were safe and in the care of Jodie’s mother.
A nurse explained that Jodie had suffered a broken nose, a fractured cheekbone and severe bruising to her face and body.
He remained in the hospital for two days.
Meanwhile, Wilkinson was arrested and remanded in custody.
In March 2023, Wilkinson appeared at Bradford Crown Court and pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm without intent and possession of a sharp article.
He received just 30 months in prison and was given an indefinite non-sexual abuse order.
