Australians in four states will get an extra hour of sleep on Sunday morning thanks to the end of daylight saving time.

Clocks will return to Australian Eastern Standard Time at 3am on Sunday, meaning the time will return to 2am for people living in New South Wales, Victoria, the Australian Capital Territory, Tasmania and South Australia.

This means that all of Australia’s eastern states will join Queensland and operate in the same time zone, with the Sunshine State opting out of daylight saving time.

Residents of South Australia and the Northern Territory will also operate on Central Standard Time.

Residents of Queensland and Western Australia will not need to turn their clocks back as these states do not observe daylight saving time.

Australians will have a slightly easier time without daylight saving time, as the country eliminates two of the five different time zones that existed during the summer.

The Northern Territory, South Australia and the New South Wales city of Broken Hill will be half an hour behind Australian Central Standard Time (ACST).

Western Australia will be two hours behind the AEST states and territories in Australian Western Standard Time (AWST).

Daylight saving time is scheduled to return at 2am on October 6, when Australians across most of the east coast will turn their clocks back one hour to get an extra 60 minutes of sunlight in the evenings.
