McDonald’s to bring its first garlic sauce to the US

The fast food chain says the special-grade garlic sauce “contains notes of garlic and soy sauce, balanced with a slight spicy sweetness.”

The new dipping sauce is inspired by the black garlic sauce found at the Golden Arches in Japan.

Continuing the Japanese connection, the sauce’s new packaging will feature eight cap designs starring fan-favorite characters from the hit anime series Jujutsu Kaisen.

This is good news for McDonald’s fans who want to see more international menu items in the US.

Customers can get the sauce free with any McNuggets order.

Or if they order any food through the app, they can have it delivered too. It’s another sign that McDonald’s is encouraging customers to order through the app.

McDonald’s is taking it so seriously that it will host a press tasting event in New York City on July 8, ahead of its launch. The host will be anime food show host Alvin Zhou.

Jujutsu Kaisen is an action anime that premiered in 2020 and has two seasons. It is based on the Japanese manga series by Gege Akutami and Ballad Kitaguni.

With every purchase of the sauce, customers can unlock a 30-day free trial of Crunchyroll, where fans can watch full episodes of Jujutsu Kaisen and other anime content.

Last week, McDonald’s US president Joe Erlinger let slip that a sandwich with a cult following would be making a comeback.

The McRib — boneless, seasoned pulled pork smothered in spicy barbecue sauce and topped with diced onions and pickles — is making a comeback in the U.S. later this year.

The sandwich, which has been removed and then added back to the menu dozens of times over the years, polarizes fast food fans: Some love it, but others hate it.

But McDonald’s knows the McRib draws customers to restaurants and drive-thrus.

Its return will be its latest weapon, along with its $5 meal deal this summer, in the battle to win back customers in 2024.
