Furious Disney fans have criticized the “woke” decision to change the rating of the Mary Poppins movie due to “discriminatory language.”

Today it emerged that the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) had raised the age rating of the children’s classic from U to PG.

The BBFC now considers Julie Andrews’ 1964 story about the magical nanny unsuitable for children to watch alone, even though the film has captivated generations of young people.

He says the reclassification is due to the use of the word Hottentots.

The outdated term was historically used by Europeans to refer to the Khoekhoe, a group of nomadic pastoralists in South Africa, but is now considered racially offensive.

And the decision was made by the BBFC, which says it helps families “choose well” by giving them guidance on what is right for them and “what is not”.

Movie fans have taken to X, formerly known as Twitter, to vent their frustrations, with many venting about the “woke” nature of the rapid change in movie ratings.

Mary Poppins has had its age rating raised from U to PG due to “discriminatory language.” Pictured above on the right is Admiral Boom, played by Reginald Owen, who believes he is a naval commander in charge of a ship and uses the word “offensive” twice in the film.

One said: ‘You couldn’t get it back.’ Julie Andrews’ film “Mary Poppins” has changed its rating from “U” to “PG.”

‘Apparently, a term used to refer to sooty-faced chimney sweeps was once used as a “derogatory term for the nomadic people of southern Africa.” I woke up without borders!’

Another added: “Mary Poppins is racist and they’re putting a poll tax on toasters.” Is it time to go home?

A different user chimed in: ‘Mary Poppins is trending because in 2024 it was decided that the movie should be changed from U to PG rating.

‘Imagine being the person who thinks Mary Poppins needs her parents’ guidance to be seen. “Ridiculing so many more important issues in the media that are really affecting children.”

And one X user fumed: ‘That’s it. This country is now officially crazy. Reclassifying Mary Poppins so that children cannot watch it alone is absolutely nonsensical; I just had to find a copy to listen to it.”

He added: “In 1954, the BBC broadcast 1984, where Winston Smith rewrites history, so what’s different here?” while another user claimed: ‘If, of all things, you’re offended by Mary Poppins then you’re 100% ab****.’

Another joked: ‘British film censors have increased the age rating of Mary Poppins, the classic film starring Julie Andrews, because it features “discriminatory language.” Could it be more ridiculous?

Users have taken to X, formerly known as Twitter, to voice their frustrations, with many speaking out about the “woke” nature of the rapid change in movie ratings.

In the film, Admiral Boom, played by Reginald Owen, who believes he is a naval commander in charge of a ship, uses the word twice.

On the first occasion, he is seen hanging from the roof of a ship and asks one of Banks’ children if they are “going to fight the Hottentots.”

Later in the film, when the chimney sweeps, whose faces are blackened by soot, dance on the roof, the admiral exclaims, “We are being attacked by Hottentots.”

He then aims fireworks at them.

According to the BBFC’s guidelines on child-friendly content, “some scenes may not be suitable for young children.”
