An Italian man has handed himself in to police after decapitating his brother before throwing his head over a balcony following a fierce argument.

The man, identified locally as Benito, 59, had a bitter fight with his brother, Annibale, 65, at their home in Pannarano, a small town about 25 miles from Naples, last night.

Although it is currently unclear exactly what the argument was about, it was loud enough for neighbors to hear and reached a point where Benito grabbed a knife and brutally attacked his brother.

Benito, whose last name is currently unknown, reportedly turned himself in to police, who arrived at the family home and found Annibale’s decapitated body covered in stab wounds.

Italian media reported that the brothers had been living unhappily together after Annibale returned from Rome, having recently retired and lost his wife.

Neighbors said the arguments were loud but occurred so often that they didn’t notice last night’s fight until they saw Annibale’s head in the street.

Italy’s national police, the Carabinieri, are investigating the horrific crime and have been speaking to friends and acquaintances of the brothers to uncover a motive for the murder.

After speaking with Benito during the night, he was taken to a prison in Benevento, which is approximately 9 miles northeast of Pannarano.

The Benevento Public Prosecutor’s Office has opened a formal investigation.

It is planned to commission a coroner to perform an autopsy on the victim’s body, which is currently in the nearby morgue. San Pio Hospital of Benevento.
