The sacred Kapilawasthu relics of Lord Buddha, located in a sacred temple in Sri Lanka, will be presented to the Dalai Lama on Thursday morning, the Dalai Lama’s office said in a statement.
The sacred relics are located at RajaGuru Sri Subuthi Waskaduwa Maha Viharaya, a Buddhist temple in Sri Lanka.
The relics of Kapilavastu in particular have immense historical and spiritual significance as they connect the devotees to the profound legacy of Lord Buddha.
The Sri Subhuthi Maha Viharaya in Waskaduwa houses 21 relics of the Lord Buddha.
‘Waskaduwe Mahindawamsa Nayaka Thero’ is the custodian of these precious Kapilawasthu relics, which have been preserved and protected for generations until now at Sri Subhuthi Maha Viharaya in Waskaduwa, Sri Lanka.
In February, on the occasion of Chotrul Duechen, the Dalai Lama gave a short general lecture from the Jataka Tales at the main Tibetan temple, Tsuglagkhang, in the hill town of Dharamshala in Himachal Pradesh, which was attended by more than 3,000 Tibetan followers, including Buddhists. monks, nuns and foreigners from different parts of the world.
Chotrul Duechen is the day of sacrifices and is celebrated on the 15th day of the 1st Tibetan month. The day, which means Great Day of Miraculous Manifestations, is one of four Buddhist festivals commemorating four events in the Buddha’s life.
Earlier in March, the relics of Lord Buddha and those of his two chief disciples, Arahant Sariputta and Maha Moggallana, were sent to four cities in Thailand for a 25-day exhibition.
The exhibition attracted a phenomenal response, with more than 4 million devotees from Thailand and other countries in the Mekong region paying tribute to the relics.
The exhibition of the revered relics, organized by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, in collaboration with the International Buddhist Confederation (IBC), traveled from New Delhi to the provinces of Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Ubon Ratchathani and Krabi on February 22.
