John Force has left neurological intensive care following treatment for a traumatic brain injury (TBI) he suffered in a horrific car crash, but he still faces a “long and difficult” journey.

The NHRA legend’s team released a statement Friday saying he had been moved to acute neurological care at their hospital, where he is reportedly still dealing with cognitive and behavioral symptoms. Force is reportedly able to converse with family members and staff and has begun walking with assistance, but is still facing “periods of confusion.”

The 75-year-old, who also suffered a fractured sternum and a right wrist injury, will likely be moved to a long-term care facility specializing in TBI at a time yet to be determined.

Force was hospitalized last week when an engine explosion caused his car to crash into a concrete wall during the NHRA Virginia Nationals. John Force Racing said the impact occurred at a speed of more than 300 mph.

His condition remained unclear for several days before his team revealed the traumatic brain injury, confirming that the 16-time NHRA champion faced a long road to recovery.

Yet despite the changes this has had on his career, Force remains the most successful racer in NHRA history, with 157 race wins to go along with his 16 titles. His career has spanned six different decades, dating back to 1978, and has seen three of his daughters follow him onto the drag racing circuit.

Force’s daughter, Brittany, who currently competes in the NHRA’s Top Fuel division, opted not to compete in an event last weekend to stay with her father in the hospital.
