Oppenheimer was the biggest winner of the night as it earned seven, including the top honor for Best Picture and big wins for Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr. and Christopher Nolan, while Emma led Poor Things to an impressive four, including her Best Female win and British film The Zone Of Interest won two.
The ending was marked by chaos after Al Pacino announced Oppenheimer as the winner of Best Picture without bothering to name all the other nominees, while Emma Stone had an embarrassing wardrobe.
The 83-year-old Scarface star took to the stage and made an awkward joke about performing Shakespeare before jumping straight into announcing the Best Picture winner.
Social media was buzzing with posts about the awkward ending to the show, with one commenting that Pacino’s announcement ‘couldn’t have been more chaotic or confusing.’
Meanwhile, Emma Stone, 35, pulled off a wardrobe malfunction as she beat an impressive field including Killers Of The Flower Moon favorite Lily Gladstone in addition to Annette Bening, Nyad, Anatomy of a Fall’s Sandra Huller and Carey Mulligan, Maestro.
Veteran actor Al Pacino, 83, appeared to struggle to stay on script in a brief preamble before announcing that Oppenheimer won best picture
There were gasps in the room when Emma Stone’s name was read out as Best Actress at the 96th Academy Awards on Sunday
Ryan Gosling gave a barnstorming performance of I’m Just Ken, which saw many of the A-listers in the room join in
When Emma took to the stage, she signaled that there was something wrong with her dress, as she quickly acknowledged it during her emotional acceptance speech.
She said, ‘Oh, boy. My dress is torn. I think it happened during I’m Just Ken. I’m pretty sure. Oh, boy, this is really — this is really overwhelming. Sorry, I’m – okay, my voice is a little off too. No matter what.’
Emma thanked her fellow nominees in addition to the five previous Best Actress winners Sally Field, Michelle Yeoh, Charlize Theron, Jessica Lange and Jennifer Lawrence.
The A-lister said: ‘The women on stage, you’re all incredible and the women in this category — um — Sandra, Annette, Carey, Lily, I share this with you. I am in awe of you. It has been such an honor to do all this together, I hope we keep doing more together.
‘I don’t know what I’m saying, oh my god, I’m all – okay.’
She went on to talk about a conversation she had with Poor Things director Yorgos Lanthimos leading up to the event.
Regardless of the chaotic events toward the end of the show, it was Oppenheimer who exploded to seven wins, including Best Picture.
