If you’ve been having battery issues since updating to iOS 17.4, here’s what you can do to fix the problem.
The latest iPhone software update brought users more than 100 new emojis, security updates, and a variety of other changes. But some users have encountered an infuriating issue that could deter them from downloading iOS 17.4.
The latest iOS update was released yesterday and provided iPhone users with a wide range of changes and bug fixes.
Notably, iOS 17.4 includes 118 new emoji including a lime, shaking heads, a phoenix, a mushroom, and a broken chain.
The update also includes a major security update for iMessage that aims to protect users’ messages against future quantum computing attacks.
However, some users who have already downloaded the update say that it has also negatively affected battery life.
Less than 24 hours after the update was released, Apple users had already taken to X (formerly Twitter), reporting that the update had caused increased battery consumption.
One frustrated user tweeted: ‘DO NOT UPGRADE TO IOS 17.4. It’s a trap, your battery will drain quickly.
iPhone users took to X, formerly Twitter, to warn others not to install the update. They complained that iOS 17.4 caused greater battery consumption
Some iPhone users shared their battery drain problems, saying the update had caused their phone’s charge to drop by up to 40 percent in just two hours.
One commenter asked: “Has anyone else experienced rapid battery drain after updating to iOS 17.4?”
Other commenters were much more direct and wrote: ‘DO NOT UPGRADE TO IOS 17.4. It’s a trap where the battery will drain quickly.’
While another commenter simply wrote: ‘Big drain. Do not update’.
Some social media users also shared the details of their battery drain issue which, if correct, shows a significantly shorter battery life.
Other commenters reported that they were having difficulty charging their batteries after updating their phone’s software.
One user wrote: ‘Today I tried to charge my iPhone 11 pro, which had 40% battery left when I connected it to charge.
‘It took more than 4 hours to charge to 94%.’
If your battery runs out after iOS update, the most important thing is to be patient.
After an update, it’s normal to expect a decrease in battery life as your iPhone continues to perform various tasks in the background, such as updating apps and rebuilding caches.
Some users who have already downloaded the update say that it has also negatively affected battery life.
Other commenters reported that they were having difficulty properly charging their phone after installing iOS 17.4.
Since your phone is doing more work than usual, it is expected to drain the battery faster than usual.
This can last anywhere from a few hours to a day, depending on the age of your phone and the bandwidth of your connection.
Restarting your phone might also help resolve these issues a little faster.
To do this, try force restarting by holding down the side or volume button until the power slider appears, then turn off the phone, wait a few seconds, and turn it on again.
Additionally, after updating iOS, some outdated apps may be causing unexpected issues with new software that can cause battery drain.
Higher battery consumption is to be expected after an update. The best way to avoid the problem is to update your apps, restart your phone, and check the battery status for any issues.
Making sure all your apps are up to date can go some way to fixing the issue, but for a more detailed analysis, you can use the iPhone Battery Tools to get more information.
Open the Settings app and navigate to the “Battery” section. Scrolling down should show how the battery consumption is divided between the different apps.
If there are apps that consume a lot of power, you can try updating the app, keeping it closed when not needed, or just deleting it completely.
Fortunately for iPhone 15 users, iOS 17.4 also includes new battery health information that allows you to learn even more about your phone.
In the ‘Battery Status and Charge’ settings, users who have upgraded can find information such as cycle count, manufacturing date, and when the battery was first used.
