Lawn experts at The Grass People say now is the time to prepare your lawn for the upcoming fall and winter months, due to milder weather conditions.

They advise that when it comes to sowing new seed to repair bare areas in the lawn, aluminum foil or other reflective items, such as CDs, should be used.

Chris McIlroy, turf expert at The Grass People, said: ‘After laying new seed, it’s important to discourage birds and other animals from eating it before it has had a chance to germinate.

‘While wildlife brings many benefits to gardens, it can also wreak havoc, especially when it comes to growing a new lawn or filling in gaps in yours.

‘Grass seeds are an accessible food source for birds, so the easiest way to deter them is by using distracting sounds and images.

‘Reflective objects create extra light which keeps birds away, especially if they are moving. An inexpensive way to do this is to use old CDs tied to bamboo sticks and place them in the garden.’

This comes after another gardening expert warned that changing weather could attract five different types of pests.

According to Richard King, director of Wigan-based landscaping company Dino Decking, there are five pests that could wreak havoc on your garden vegetation this autumn if you don’t take steps to eliminate them.

As temperatures drop, the expert warned gardeners to prepare for the arrival of slugs and spiders, as well as the large presence of an unexpected creature: the wasp.

He explained that because of their natural diet and lifestyle, their plants become a breeding ground and home where they can feast and destroy with wanton abandon.

Richard said: ‘With the arrival of autumn, Britons will find a new variety of insects in their gardens. Creepy bugs such as spiders, cluster flies, wasps and slugs are common at this time of year.

‘Insects have their own benefits in the garden, especially in protecting the ecosystem, however, without some control, they can wreak havoc on plants and grass, which could cause long-term damage over the winter.’
