Hurricane Beryl made landfall in Texas, battering the Gulf Coast and knocking out power to more than a million people as the storm moved inland.

The storm made landfall as a Category 1 hurricane near Matagorda Beach around 4 a.m. Monday, the National Hurricane Center confirmed, bringing heavy rain, storm surge and gusty winds across the state.

Forecasters estimate there is a continued danger of life-threatening storm surge flooding along the coast, damaging hurricane-force winds, and significant flash and urban flooding as Beryl moves inland through the lower Mississippi Valley.

Thousands of flights cancelled or delayed to and from Texas airports

More than 1,300 flights were cancelled and another 1,000 delayed in the United States on Monday morning, most of them in Texas, as Hurricane Beryl wreaks havoc on travel.

Most of the affected flights were departing from or arriving at George Bush Intercontinental Airport and William P. Hobby Airport in Houston, according to Flight reported.

Flights from Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport and Dallas Love Field Airport were also affected by the chaos.

American Airlines said CBS News which will suspend operations at Houston airports on Monday until approximately 3 p.m. ET.

“We will assess conditions tomorrow to determine if it is safe to resume operations in the afternoon/evening,” American said.

New tracking map shows deadly storm’s path after landfall in Texas

A new forecast map from the National Weather Service shows Hurricane Beryl ravaging Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas.

Wind gusts reached 94 mph in Freeport, Texas, and Galveston Bay measured a sustained wind of 73 mph and a gust of 82 mph at 8 a.m. Monday.

The new forecast projects that Beryl should move northward over the next 12 years through a break in the subtropical ridge, with its center moving across eastern Texas.

After that, the cyclone is forecast to turn northeastward with an increase in forward speed, and accelerate across the lower Mississippi Valley and into the Ohio Valley.
