A Sydney couple were recently photographed with their dog sitting at a table at a Guzman y Gomez restaurant in the city's Inner West.

A couple of Guzman and Gomez’s customers have been criticized for letting their dog sit at their table while they ate.

The Sydney couple were recently pictured enjoying their meal in the city’s inner west while their dog sat on the counter, where other people would later eat.

Another customer was left “horrified” and shared the gruesome scene on Reddit.

“I love dogs, but what kind of idiot puts their dog on the table where people eat?” one person asked.

“I’m a dog owner. That’s stupid. I don’t want any canine idiot germs on my burrito please,” said another.

A spokesperson for Guzman and Gomez told FEMAIL: ‘The GYG shift leader asked the guest to remove the dog from the bench (and the restaurant) as soon as they saw this happening. It appears another guest took a photo before this happened.

‘GYG’s policy is in line with the New South Wales Food Authority guidelines: no domestic dogs are permitted in the restaurant, domestic dogs may be permitted in outdoor dining areas only at the business’s discretion and no live animals are permitted in areas where food is handled.

‘Assistance animals (such as service dogs) must be allowed in areas used by guests. It’s disappointing that a guest chose to do so, but the GYG team followed our policies as soon as they were made aware.’

Other Australians criticised dog owners who treat their pets like humans rather than animals.

“Dog lovers are crazy around here,” said one man. “It’s overwhelming, every time I’m in Newtown I see dogs in places you least expect.”

“That’s bullshit. Your dog doesn’t have to go with you everywhere,” one woman wrote.

“I don’t hate dogs, but you shouldn’t be able to take them wherever you want,” another echoed.

“Your dog is not going to suffer from anxiety because you didn’t take him to Guzmán y Gómez,” added one.

A woman shared a list of reasons why it’s not safe to bring dogs to restaurants.

‘Dogs (other than service dogs, obviously) are not and should not be allowed everywhere because they can be unpredictable for a multitude of reasons, can be a liability, and can easily end up ruining another stranger’s dining experience despite how their humans behave.

‘Imagine trying to eat while a nearby dog accidentally defecates on the floor or a highly allergic person shows up at a reservation and has to leave.

“I love animals as much as the next person, don’t get me wrong, but I’m not going to bring my cat to dinner because I’m going to miss him or whatever. I’m an adult who understands that’s not reasonable or considerate.”
