A woman has sparked fury among Gold Coast locals after she stopped in a public car park at Burleigh Head (pictured) to reserve it for a friend.

A woman has angered motorists by reserving a prime parking spot at a popular beach by standing in the empty space.

The woman was filmed standing in the empty car park in Burleigh Hill, on the Gold Coast, while waiting for a friend to arrive.

A silver SUV attempted to enter the park, but the woman waved at it shortly before she stepped aside for her friend in a Hyundai i30 to take the space.

Footage of the incident was shared on Facebook, where commentators criticized the ploy in an area where it was difficult to find a parking spot.

“In fact, I couldn’t have not gone in if I had seen that I would have chosen that park, even if I didn’t need it,” one wrote.

“No one has exclusive rights to a public parking lot nor should they get away with it.”

Other social media users said they would have pressured the pedestrian to leave the space and take over the park if they were in the same situation.

“I’d just drive up, she’ll move out eventually, I’m patient,” one wrote.

“I have a dash cam, so it would be a good display.”

“The person will move when you drive towards them,” a third added.

However, some said this was not necessarily true.

“They don’t move, I was half in the park and the guy in front of me didn’t move even with the threat of hitting him,” one wrote.

“It’s not Australian for him to do what this outburst is doing,” said another.

While there are no specific road laws that prohibit this law, pedestrians cannot create a traffic hazard by obstructing a driver’s path.

Anyone who violates that law risks a $154 fine.
