They were last photographed together in public on Valentine’s Day at an event celebrating the works of William Shakespeare.

The couple were at an event on Wednesday last week at the National Gallery with a friend and said they “seemed happy and positive as always”.

Another old friend told how the attentive Mr Kingston had focused on others “perhaps at the expense of his own mental health”.

A priest nicknamed Vicar of Baghdad also paid tribute last night to the deceased devout Christian.

The Rev. Canon Andrew White, who led Iraq’s only Anglican church and worked with Kingston in Baghdad, said the pair of “adrenaline junkies” cheated death countless times.

Kingston worked in the war-torn country for almost three years, mediating conflicts and negotiating the release of hostages.

Paying tribute to his “best intern ever”, Rev White told the Mail: ‘I worked with Tom in all sorts of dangerous places. Most of the time we were there in the middle of war zones.’

Rev. White described Mr. Kingston as “a risk-taker and a person of great faith.”

‘Tom wasn’t a yellowbelly. He was never afraid. He could never tell him “do this” and he would say he was too dangerous. “He was always willing to be there.”

Kingston’s work with the priest, who suffers from multiple sclerosis, helped sustain the Anglican church in Baghdad, founded in 1990.

Kingston, who studied economic history at the University of Bristol, had several brushes with death, notably during a suicide church bombing in 2004, which claimed 22 lives.

Reverend White recalled another occasion when the couple visited a shrine of the prophet Ezekiel in Babylon and got stuck in a huge traffic jam on the way back.

He said: “We couldn’t move and I remember saying, ‘What do we do, Tom?’ And he said, ‘Pray.’ I said, “Lord, have mercy on us,” and suddenly a huge oil tanker exploded about 25 meters in front of us.

‘If we hadn’t been in the traffic jam, they would have killed us instantly. But this was something that happened every day.”

Before Mr Kingston met Lady Gabriella, Reverend White remembers telling her: ‘All my interns accomplish two things. They do really exciting work when they get out of here and marry really beautiful women. And you will do both… and he did both.’

The priest said he met Lady Gabriella, 42, who is 57th in line to the throne, at the Carlton Club in London’s Mayfair after Kingston proposed to her in 2018.
