Four-year-old boy dies as man and woman ‘known’ to boy are charged in Smithton, Tasmania

A man has been charged with manslaughter following the death of a four-year-old boy.

The boy died in Smithton, northwest Tasmania, at 10:15 p.m. on May 31.

A 35-year-old man, “well known” to the boy, was arrested and charged overnight.

“He has been remanded in custody to appear at an out-of-hours court session at Burnie Magistrates Court on Sunday morning,” a Tasmania Police spokesperson said.

A 30-year-old woman, who was also “well known to the child,” was charged with child abuse.

He was granted bail and will appear in court at a later date.
