Formula One fans have been heaping praise on Oscar Piastri following a stunning performance that secured the McLaren star a famous win at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
The young Australian stunned Charles Leclerc with a bold move at the first corner in Baku and held his position amid a barrage of attacks from the Ferrari man during a thrilling race on Sunday afternoon.
Ahead of the weekend’s action, McLaren confirmed that Piastri would make way for team-mate Lando Norris amid the Briton’s battle for the drivers’ world championship against Max Verstappen.
But Piastri showed why he is widely regarded as a future world champion with an incredible performance to secure his second Grand Prix win under the Baku sun.
And F1 fans believe Sunday’s performance has highlighted that Piastri should be the main man at McLaren, not Norris.
“Literally showing what a number 1 pilot looks like,” one fan said on X.
“He has more world champion potential than Lando,” said another fan.
A third fan said: “He’ll be champion before Norris.”

A delighted Piastri said after crossing the finish line: ‘After the stop I saw we were quite close again and I felt we had more grip. I knew I had to go for it because I knew that if I didn’t get the overtake at the beginning of the stint I would never get it.
“There are no relaxing laps here, it was hard work but it will be remembered as one of my best races.”
