Former Formula One driver Romain Grosjean left furious at IndyCar exhibition $1 Million Thermal Challenge Sunday after he crashed on the first lap of the first heat race.

Just minutes into the first heat at the 17-turn, 3.067-mile race track, Scott Dixon crashed into the back of Grosjean.

It caused the Frenchman to swing wildly towards Rinus VeeKay, who then hit Christian Lundgaard. Dixon received an avoidable contact penalty while Grosjean, who moved to IndyCar from Formula 1, was furious.

‘I mean, who’s going to pay for the damages? “We came here with no points on the line and we did nothing wrong and the car is completely destroyed,” Grosjean fumed after walking from his crashed car down the private members’ circuit to pit road.

“It’s not what I signed up for in IndyCar.”

Grosjean is in his first season with Juncos Hollinger Racing – the third team in four years for Grosjean – and the small organization does not have the same operating budget as the top IndyCar teams.

The former French-Swiss Formula One driver entered IndyCar for a season with minnow Dale Coyne Racing before earning a shot at Andretti Global.

He had a difficult two seasons with Andretti, and his streak ended with Grosjean and team staff yelling at each other at the end of a qualifying session.

Andretti decided not to extend Grosjean’s contract and he joined JHR. The Juncos team expanded to two cars last season to accommodate Argentine driver Agustín Canapino.

grosjean He hasn’t won in three seasons and finished 13th in the IndyCar standings for Andretti last year. He earned consecutive second-place finishes at Long Beach and Barber Motorsports Park, but his season performance slowed dramatically after the Indianapolis 500.

In 2020, Grosjean was lucky to survive a terrible crash at the Bahrain Grand Prix. He was going 119 mph when he hit a metal barrier and his car exploded in a fireball around him.

The impact was estimated at 67G, a force equivalent to 67 times his body weight. In comparison, hard braking in an F1 car produces around 6 Gs.

The French driver surprisingly managed to escape the furious furnace.

Grosjean’s Haas car split in half after passing through the barrier and quickly caught fire. He was trapped inside the cockpit for 27 seconds before climbing out, removing his stuck foot from his racing boot to do so.

He suffered only minor burns to the back of his hands and a sprained left ankle, and was released from the hospital shortly after.

The accident occurred on the first lap when the right rear wheel of his car collided with the left front wheel of the AlphaTauri of Russian driver Daniil Kvyat, when he was trying to move from the left to the right side of the Sakhir track.

The ring-shaped halo device at the front of Grosjean’s cockpit protected his head by withstanding the enormous impact, and he credited it with saving his life.
