That’s according to travel expert Abby Dunn, who has traveled to Florida more than 40 times and has shared 13 places outside of these cities that you may have never heard of, but that have a lot to offer tourists.

Abby, Marketing Manager at Florida Oceanreveals one of the few places in the world where people can swim year-round with manatees, “serene islands” with “pristine coastlines” and shopping havens packed with designer boutiques.

Ideal for a family getaway

Abby says: ‘Just a short drive from Walt Disney World and close to Legoland and Universal Studios, Davenport is an ideal base for families visiting Florida’s famous attractions.’

She adds: “There are so many options to choose from when it comes to villas in Florida that you’re sure to find something that fits your budget – plus, it’s often more cost-effective than staying in the parks. You’ll also have the luxury of privacy, including your own pool. Perfect for quiet, sunny afternoons.”

Kissimmee

Kissimmee is “another popular destination for those visiting key parks and attractions,” says Abby. She adds that “the adventure hotspot is just minutes away from Walt Disney World Resort.”

Abby says, “There are plenty of other parks and attractions to visit in Kissimmee, including water parks and places to enjoy airboat rides, ziplines, and stunning nature hikes. You won’t be short on amenities either, with shops, restaurants, and local events for the whole family.”

Ideal for a girls trip

Ybor City

Ybor City, a “party town” that offers “lively bars and clubs” and is a top culinary center. It is also the “tobacco capital of the world.”

Abby says: ‘If you’re looking for a girls trip to Florida to enjoy some partying, Ybor City, Tampa is a great option. This historic neighborhood is famous for its lively bars and clubs and is sure to keep you dancing all week long.

‘If you’re looking to immerse yourself in culture, this district has it all. Known as the ‘tobacco capital of the world’, you can visit tobacco shops, watch cigars being rolled and even take a tour of a cigar factory for a truly unique experience.’

Ybor City is also a culinary hub and Abby recommends trying an “authentic Cuban sandwich” while you’re there.

Fort Lauderdale

Fort Lauderdale is perfect for travelers who are in their “relaxation phase,” Abby says. She adds, “It offers lots of beautiful beaches and things to do, but with fewer parties and crowds.”

‘Your group can take advantage of Las Olas Boulevard, a vibrant street lined with shops, restaurants and bars, while also enjoying its extensive canal system, which allows for leisurely boat tours of the city.’

It’s also home to one of the largest shopping malls in the U.S., Sawgrass Mills, which Abby says is “perfect for those in need of a little retail therapy.”

Clearwater Beach

Clearwater Beach offers “fine white sand beaches and crystal clear waters,” explains Abby.

Abby says: ‘If your group of girls is a mix of active and laid-back types, Clearwater Beach is a great choice. As well as offering powdery white sand beaches and crystal-clear waters, there’s plenty of access to water activities like parasailing and dolphin watching, so active girls won’t be bored.

‘It’s also very close (five minutes) to the Clearwater Aquarium, which offers a great day outdoors at a slower pace, while Busch Gardens Tampa Bay (theme park) is an hour’s drive away – (offering) exciting attractions to while away the afternoon.

‘A final benefit: flying to Tampa from Orlando could save you between £80 and £100 per person.’

Ideal for a romantic getaway

Key West, the southernmost city in the United States, has a “true Caribbean influence,” with “stunning palm trees but a very lively atmosphere,” says Abby. She says it’s “perfect for couples looking for that buzz in a beautiful setting.”

The Florida expert adds: “There is so much to explore and see in Key West, making it easy to fill your itinerary.”

‘Mallory Square hosts daily sunset celebrations, including street performers and local vendors to enjoy, as well as a variety of waterfront dining options. Couples looking for some adventure can enjoy snorkeling, diving and sailing in its waters.’

Anna Maria Island

Anna Maria Island is a “stunning spot” on the Gulf Coast, Abby says. She adds, “Uncrowded beaches and a laid-back vibe make this spot ideal for couples looking for a quiet experience. Whether you’re taking a sunset cruise, walking along the beach, or dining waterfront, it really is the perfect romantic setting.”

But Anna Maria Island isn’t all about relaxation. Abby says, “There’s plenty of local charm to explore, from shops and galleries to museums and historic sites. But, if that’s not enough, Tampa is just 45 minutes away, so a day trip is always on the table.”
