Ford is recalling nearly 243,000 Maverick small pickup trucks in the United States because their taillights may not come on.

A faulty computer module can cause the taillights to remain off while driving.

This makes it difficult for other drivers behind to see the trucks and increases the risk of an accident.

Documents posted Wednesday on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website say dealers will update the software to fix the problem at no cost to owners.

The report says the fault can “cause reduced visibility for other drivers in dark conditions, increasing the risk of a collision.”

While the 242,669 Mavericks are from the 2022 to 2024 model years, they were manufactured between February 2021 and March of this year, according to the recall report.

Notification letters will be mailed starting May 20 telling drivers what to do, which is to simply contact a local dealer and book an appointment to bring in their Maverick.

It comes after Ford was forced to recall more than 40,000 small SUVs over fears of gas leaks that have already caused fires under the bonnet.

The recall covered certain Bronco Sport SUVs from the 2022 and 2023 model years, as well as the 2022 Escape SUV. All 42,652 have 1.5-liter engines.
