- Facebook has confirmed that a ‘technical error’ is causing the app to chirp
- To fix this annoying issue, you can simply turn off the app sound in settings.
If you’ve been hearing your Facebook making a strange chirping sound, don’t worry, it’s not all in your head.
Users of the app have been plagued by an irritating update sound that the company says is an “unfortunate technical error.”
In a post on unfortunate technical that we are in the process of solving.”
At least for now, Meta, which owns Facebook, has not said when it will be able to fix the problem.
But luckily for those of you who are going crazy over this problem, there is a simple solution.
Is your Facebook screeching at you? If so, there is no need to worry as this sound is not in your head but is actually just a strange error.
Facebook communications manager Andy Stone confirmed that the strange chirping noise users have been hearing was caused by a technical issue.
Meta has not provided any additional information regarding the issue at this time.
However, it seems to cause the Facebook iOS app to repeatedly trigger the “refresh” sound every time the app is open.
On Sunday, some social media users reported that the issue was causing problems.
On It happens when I scroll or don’t even touch the phone.’
Another added: “My Facebook makes a weird chirping noise while I’m scrolling and I tried restarting my phone and it didn’t work.” What do I do now?’
While Facebook has confirmed that this is a technical issue that it is currently investigating, some more conspiracy-minded commenters quickly came to a very different conclusion.
One X commenter wrote: “Don’t worry guys, that’s just information from the microphone listening to you.”
Another added: “Just like the old days, when you heard a slight click on your landline, it meant you were being wiretapped.”
Meanwhile, another joked: “That’s just your little friend, the government, waving at you.”
Already on Sunday, some commenters on X, formerly Twitter, reported that their Facebook app was making strange noises even when they weren’t touching their phone.
Fortunately, this is simply a sound bug that can be easily fixed with a few tweaks to Facebook settings.
To prevent the app from chirping, the easiest solution is to disable the sound within the app.
First, open the menu and go to ‘Settings and Privacy’.
From there, select “Settings” and navigate to the “Media” tab in preferences.
This will open the ‘Sounds’ menu where you will find the option for ‘In-App Sound’.
Fortunately, the problem is easy to solve, as you can simply turn off app sounds by navigating to the “Media” settings under “Preferences” in the iOS app.
All you need to do to stop Facebook chirping is to disable this option.
However, this is not the worst technical problem that Facebook users have faced in the last year.
In May of last year, a strange bug sent friend requests to anyone whose profile a user had been looking at.
This embarrassing mistake led to mortified users being caught snooping through their exes’ profiles with their hands.
And in August, another glitch caused users’ news feeds to be flooded with posts from strangers sharing content from celebrity pages.
While this may seem harmless, some trolls took advantage of the issue to post a torrent of spam on celebrity pages, including PayPal links, cryptocurrency ads, and even links to pornography.
