EastEnders legend Laurie Brett, 55, has come forward with her story

EastEnders legend Laurie Brett has teased her “emotional” and “intense” storyline on her thrilling return to the soap as Jane Beale.

The 55-year-old Scottish actress, who first appeared on the soap in 2004, made her surprise return to television on Monday night’s show.

Last week, Jane surprised Cindy (Michelle Collins) and Ian Beale (Adam Woodyatt) when she unexpectedly returned to the Square.

But since the shocking scene ended on a cliffhanger, fans had to wait for her long-awaited full return.

Laurie left the BBC show for a second time in 2017 after her involvement in the iconic Who Killed Lucy Beale? storyline.

Speaking about her return, Laurie talked about what it was like for Jane to be reunited with her son Bobby (Clay Milner Russell), who killed Lucy back in the day.

She said: ‘The moment Jane sees Bobby, it’s almost like an out-of-body experience for her. The whole world stops and all she can see is him.

“Her heart explodes with love and everything else goes black. It’s a beautiful moment. I think there are some scenes that will make people cry.

“No matter what Bobby has done to Jane in the past, a mother will always forgive. You only have to look at what Dot and Nick did in their time to see that’s true.”

Sharing her nerves about returning to EastEnders, Laurie said: ‘I was quite nervous on the first day, thinking: ‘God, do I remember how to be Jane?’

‘But even though I was nervous, I’d had plenty of time to think about it as I’d had the scripts for a while, so it was just a matter of getting back into the swing of things.

‘When I walked onto the set and saw Adam (Woodyatt) and Michelle (Collins), and also our director Karl Neilson, who directed the live episode in 2015, plus a lot of the crew I knew, all my worries disappeared.

“There were so many familiar faces welcoming me. After half an hour, it was like I had never left.”

Talking about her awkward history with Cindy, Laurie shared what the atmosphere was like when she saw Jane.

She said: ‘It’s a bit of a shock! They’ve never met before, but Jane knows a lot more about Cindy than Cindy knows about Jane because of all those years she spent with the Beale children.

‘So Jane gets hit on by Cindy, but she’s also a little outraged and thinks, “What are you doing in my house?”

“Seeing Cindy is almost like seeing a ghost for Jane. Jane’s head is spinning, which is natural, given the strange situation.”
