Disturbing details are emerging in the investigation into the death of a young man in a suburban Melbourne park.

The 28-year-old man was found injured in Balmoral Park, near Lennon Parkway, at 4.20am on Saturday.

Emergency services performed CPR on the man, however, he died at the scene.

Victoria Police Detective Inspector Dean Thomas said homicide investigators had discovered “a number of knives” at Balmoral Park in Derrimut, about 22 kilometres west of the CBD, and the man appeared to have suffered stab wounds.

“I believe several knives were found in the area,” he said.

“Again, do they have any connection to this? They’ll need to undergo forensic examination.”

Inspector Thomas said the man was last seen by his sister at around 9pm in the Derrimut area, and is believed to have been in the company of four other men.

Police are now trying to piece together the men’s movements and have appealed for members of the public who may have dashcam footage or seen anything suspicious in the area to come forward.

Inspector Thomas also said police believed there may have been people in the park with the victim who “dispersed”.

“We don’t really know, but we think there may have been several people here, who may have scattered and fled,” he said.

Some people in the park performed CPR on the victim before emergency services personnel arrived.

The call to police came from a person in the park, Inspector Thomas said.

“They turned up in the park and we’re obviously trying to piece that all together, to figure out what connection they have to the deceased,” he said.

He said police had no evidence to suggest the incident was gang-related.

“It appears our (victim) has no ties to any gang, but again, it’s still early,” he said.

Police notified the victim’s family in the morning and the man’s mother is understood to have arrived at the scene in a distressed state.

Forensic police officers continue to search the park for evidence.

“The most important thing is that we don’t rush,” he said.

“We have to make sure we don’t miss anything.”
