- Daniel Ricciardo helped Max Verstappen in what could be his last Grand Prix
- Ricciardo’s future with RB is in serious doubt amid widespread speculation
- But it helped Verstappen in his battle with Lando Norris in Singapore.
Daniel Ricciardo made sure he did not make a quiet exit from Formula One as the Australian veteran provided the ultimate team move in what could prove pivotal in Max Verstappen’s world championship defence.
RB driver Ricciardo is on the verge of losing his seat, with reports suggesting the popular Australian will be replaced by rookie driver Liam Lawson at next month’s United States Grand Prix.
Ricciardo looked set to quietly walk away from the sport in 18th place, with Alex Albon and Kevin Magnussen having retired before the race, before shocking fans and pundits when he headed to the pits with a handful of laps remaining.
He returned to the circuit on a fresh set of soft tyres and set the fastest lap of the race, which had previously been held by race winner Lando Norris.
McLaren star Norris is chasing Verstappen for the world championship, and Ricciardo’s quick lap meant the young Briton was denied a bonus point in the race.
Red Bull star Verstappen was informed of Ricciardo’s team’s latest move after the chequered flag and the grateful Dutchman simply said: “Thanks Daniel.”
Verstappen finished second behind race winner Norris, while Ricciardo’s compatriot Oscar Piastri took third following his victory in Baku last time out.
We will continue to report more.
