A conservative activist who was involved in several lawsuits with Maine school districts over transgender inclusion policies and critical race theory has committed suicide.
Shawn McBreairty, 53, made a name for himself in 2021 after appearing on Tucker Carlson’s now-defunct Fox News show and claiming that he would not be allowed to attend his twin daughters’ graduation because of his opposition to the teachings of the district on race.
McBreairty, who called himself “America’s Most Dangerous Dad,” had been banned from Maine School District 51 property in Cumberland after he padlocked a billboard on a school fence. demanding the firing of Superintendent Jeff Porter.
Friends of the activist and his wife Patti have been posting their condolences on social media, and several local media outlets reported that McBreairty died on Monday. The details of his death are still unclear.

After her daughter’s graduation, McBreairty moved to Hampden and began attending board meetings there, even though she did not have children in any school there.
He was outspoken at Regional School Unit 22 meetings and spoke of his opposition to library books such as All Boys Aren’t Blue, which critics say included sexually graphic material.
The district banned McBreairty from attending school functions, citing his “flagrant and repeated failure to comply with RSU 22’s reasonable policies regarding attendance at meetings.”

But the Maine District Court ultimately overturned the order, ruling that McBreairty’s free speech was being restricted.
McBreairty had also been sued by the neighboring Hermon School Department, where a teacher accused him of bullying her and lying about her in 2021.
The lawsuit claimed McBreairty lied about the teacher on podcasts and social media, alleging she was a “sexual predator” and “groomed children.”
He also filed lawsuits against Brewer and Hermon officials, alleging they violated his First Amendment rights.
More recently, in February, McBreairty said he filed another lawsuit, this time against Brewer High School Superintendent Gregg Palmer, Brewer High School Principal Brent Slowikowski, and Michelle MacDonald, an English teacher at the school.
He argued in the lawsuit that students should be able to request that the school reverse its transgender bathroom policy, which allows students to use the bathroom that corresponds with their gender identity.
