A Cleveland Browns player was arrested in Key West, Florida, on charges of driving while intoxicated after allegedly crashing his truck into a local restaurant.
Defensive lineman Lonnie Phelps, 23, was arrested by Key West police at 8:47 p.m. at the Red Shoe Island Bistro on Wednesday, where his truck crashed into the trendy island hotspot.
Police say they found the black Hyundai wedged into the building and were sent to the scene in reference to a traffic accident.
Phelps and his girlfriend, who were uncooperative throughout the entire ordeal, were identified by witnesses, according to police, as body camera footage shows the NFL player telling local authorities that his ID and credit cards were in the car.
Bodycam footage obtained by DaliyMail.com also shows Phelps constantly disobeying orders and talking to officers while they question him, all while slurring his words, a sign of being under the influence.
Defensive lineman Lonnie Phelps was arrested by Key West police at 8:47 p.m. Wednesday.
According to a police report, he crashed his black Hyundai into the Red Shoe Island Bistro.
Phelps eventually agreed to undergo voluntary field sobriety tests, but rebelled on several occasions after complaining about the way they were conducted.
He was then taken into custody and asked to sit in the back of a police patrol car.
While riding with deputies to the Monroe County Detention Center, Phelps constantly complained about his arrest and that he just wanted to get the incident “over with.”
“Phelps talked about how thirsty he was,” one officer wrote in her report, adding: “Because I didn’t know what I was going to do to him because females are the worst, he asked me not to kill him, he asked me how long. How long does it take me to get out of trouble? How long was I the detective and found out that he was Russian?
Once at the station, Phelps was no more cooperative than he was at the crime scene, according to police, as he refused to take a breathalyzer.
He even urinated on himself while sitting in a chair at one point, according to the report.
Phelps was eventually cited for DUI and property damage. He is due in court on July 7.
Phelps signed with the Browns as an undrafted free agent in 2023 after starring at the University of Kansas, despite not playing in a regular-season game in his rookie season.
