A bride-to-be has sparked a heated reaction from both sides of her family over controversial cards attached to her wedding invitation.
Instead of the traditional open bar, the couple opted for a “drink ticket system” in which each adult guest received a ticket for two drinks only.
The card further stipulated that drinks were to be ordered and consumed “from your seat at the assigned table.”
Guests will also be prohibited from transferring unused drink tickets to other wedding guests.
The wedding venue assured the bride that this type of drink ticket service “happens all the time” and the bride herself didn’t think it “was a big deal,” which made what followed all the more shocking.
A bride-to-be has sparked a heated reaction from both sides of her family over controversial cards attached to her wedding invitation.
On Reddit, the bride said she had been “called a lot of rude things” after family and friends received her cards.
One guy even contacted her to let her know that she was being a “jerk” by trying to control the drinks and “spoiling the fun of a wedding reception.”
The so-called ‘bridezilla’ justified her actions by explaining: “I come from a family with a lot of alcoholism and I just don’t feel comfortable being around people who drink a lot.”
She thought the card letting guests know what to expect would be taken simply as a “classy heads up.”
Most Redditors agreed with the outraged wedding guests.
“His fine plan went from moderately novel to aggressively controlling the more he explained it,” one said.
He joked: ‘Are you going to have Aunt Joan as a security guard if she gets out of her chair with a glass of chard in her hand?’
Another found the ticket system “reasonable.”
“Control costs and keep drinking a little,” they said.
Many users suggested that the idea of a dry wedding was a much better and less offensive solution to address the bride’s level of discomfort with drinking.
Instead of the traditional open bar, the couple opted for a ‘drink ticket system’ in which each adult guest received a ticket for two drinks only.
Most Redditors thought the two-drink entree service was fine, but the extra rules about where to order and drink were completely overkill.
“Playing police about how and where they drink, and also claiming that the fines are ‘non-transferable,’ that’s ridiculous,” said one.
‘If 90-year-old Aunt Betty doesn’t want to drink ANY alcohol and is happy to give tickets to Uncle Joe, why not?’ reasoned another.
The idea of keeping an eye on the drinks at the wedding led to some imaginative scenarios being tossed around in the comments.
“No one knew how lively Grandma was until they had to tackle her by the knees,” one woman joked.
Another suggested the rule could “ruin the whole atmosphere of the event.”
‘I like having a few drinks at a wedding. Especially if the event lasts 5-6 hours and there is food, two drinks are nothing. “Alcohol is a social lubricant and an aid to dancing,” she explained.
“Maybe I wouldn’t even go.”
