Disgraced AFL legend Barry Cable has been charged with historic sex offenses against a nine-year-old girl.

It comes nearly a year after a judge in a civil case ruled that Cable was a pedophile.

WA Police revealed on Friday that Cable, 80, had been charged with offenses involving a child, but according to The West Australian, she is not one of the five women who shared their experiences with the WA District Court.

Cable won two VFL premierships in 1975 and 1977 with North Melbourne under coach Ron Barassi.

It comes nearly a year after a judge in a civil case ruled that Cable was a pedophile.

Police will allege that between 1967 and 1968, Cable sexually assaulted a girl who was between nine and 10 years old at the time.

He has been charged with five counts of indecent treatment of a girl under 13 and two counts of unlawful carnal knowledge of a girl under 13.

Cable, from Shelley, is due to appear at Perth Magistrates Court on May 30.

The former AFL Hall of Famer would have been 24 years old at the time of the alleged offences.

That was the best time of his football career, winning WAFL premierships in both 1967 and 1968.

Following the civil trial, Judge Mark Herron ruled that he believed the allegations of the five women who testified.

It awarded the lead plaintiff damages of more than $800,000, but Cable filed for bankruptcy days before the trial was to begin.

Following the sentencing, Police Commissioner Col Blanch confirmed that the case was being reinvestigated.

Cable has been stripped of his AFL legend and Hall of Fame status.

North Melbourne also removed him from their Hall of Fame, as did the Sports Australia Hall of Fame.

The WA Institute of Sports Hall of Champions and the WA Football Commission Hall of Fame also dropped him.
