Barbra Streisand and her husband James Brolin live, unsurprisingly, in an elegant Malibu mansion surrounded by 3,000 rose bushes, described last year as an “idyllic oasis” by an interior design magazine.
But for Brolin’s troubled youngest son, Jess, home is a small motel on the outskirts of Ojai, the celebrity-favorite, art-filled California town.
The 52-year-old, brother of Men in Black and Avengers star Josh, 56, was recently spotted outside the three-star Topa Vista Hotel, which sits on a busy road opposite a cafe and hair salon, exclusive photos from DailyMail.com show.
The younger Brolin, who weighs more than 350 pounds, was also photographed again last week while waiting for a bus in downtown Ojai.
Jess Brolin was photographed waiting for a bus in downtown Ojai, where he has been living in a modest home.
The 52-year-old, who is Barbra Streisand’s stepson through her husband James Brolin, was dressed casually in a black Batman logo T-shirt, a pair of baggy denim shorts and a pair of brown sneakers.
Jess was with her famous family in 1998 when her father received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Jess, who is visibly overweight, was dressed in a black T-shirt with the Batman logo, a pair of baggy denim shorts and worn brown sneakers with a bandage around his left ankle.
Her new temporary home, which boasts on its website that it has “eight air-conditioned bedrooms,” each with a flat-screen TV, is owned by Los Angeles nightclub mogul Steve Edelson, 64.
Photos of the property show modest-looking but comfortable rooms, all decorated with wood paneling and plush leather armchairs.
Currently, calls to Topa Vista go directly to voicemail, where a message appears saying, “If you are calling Topa Vista, our space is full at this time.”
A source told DailyMail.com that current guests, including Jess, “have been there for a few months and will be there for a few more months.”
Although Jess’s new home is modest, it represents a marked improvement in her lot.
Jess, pictured last week, had already made headlines a decade ago when he was photographed rummaging through trash in his neighborhood.
Despite his family’s attempts to help him, Jess still finds himself in temporary housing ten years later, now at the Topa Vista Inn, and has never attempted to restart his showbiz career.

However, his current living situation marks an improvement in his fortunes, as he previously lived in a truck and on the streets.

In 2011, he was living in a beat-up 1981 Toyota pickup truck in the city after the trust fund he inherited from his mother ran out.
Jane Agee, the first of her father’s three wives, died tragically in a car accident in 1995, 10 years after her divorce from the veteran actor.
Three years later, after the truck broke down, Jess began sleeping on the streets and was also photographed raiding a dumpster for food.
At the time, a representative for stepmother Barbra said the family had attempted to help but their offers were rejected, adding in a statement: “We have offered help and support, and continue to do so.
“We love him very much and only want the best for him.”
Representatives for James Brolin and Barbra Streisand did not immediately respond to DailyMail.com’s requests for comment.
Despite offers of help, Jess is still in temporary housing a decade later and has never attempted to restart his showbiz career, which was limited to two films and a single stint of extended employment that came in 2001, when he worked as a producer on the television series Black Scorpion, a low-budget superhero series set in Los Angeles.
Jess was reportedly left homeless and penniless after the trust fund he inherited from his mother ran out in 2011. He is seen walking home in the midst of the Southern California heat wave last week with a gallon of water and Gatorade in hand.

Young Brolin, seen left with his father in his youth, is rarely seen with his famous relatives now, but did appear on his brother Josh’s Instagram years ago.
Jess’s modest motel accommodations are in stark contrast to the luxury homes her famous family enjoyed and the lavish residences he enjoyed as a child.
While his father, James, and stepmother, Barbra, own a palatial estate in Malibu, his brother, Josh, currently lives in a $7.1 million, six-bedroom farmhouse in Montecito, famous for also being the home of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, as well as Oprah and Katy Perry.
In addition to the Montecito home, which has its own equestrian arena, Josh also owns a $3.2 million five-bedroom home in Atlanta, Georgia, which he currently rents for $35,000 a month.
As children, Josh and Jess grew up in luxury on a ranch in Paso Robles and later in a mansion in Santa Barbara.
Jess lives in the eight-room Topa Vista Inn in Ojai and will likely be there for months.
Jess’s stepmother, Barbra Streisand, and her father, James Brolin, live in comfort and luxury in the actress’s 19-room, $20 million cliffside mansion in Malibu.
His older brother, Josh, recently purchased a six-bedroom ranch house for $7.1 million in Montecito, where he lives with his wife and children.
But despite his lavish surroundings, Josh previously described himself as a “neglected rich kid” whose wild teenage years were spent stealing cars to fund his drug addiction, in a 2014 interview.
He continued: “It was Santa Barbara. It was the ’80s. It was punk rock. We either had kids from rich, neglectful parents or kids from poor parents, so it was a mix.
“But we basically grew up the same way. I’ve never seen a group like that before or since.”
He added: ‘I mean, I never got into it (drug use) and I never died from it, which is a good thing.
“I had 19 friends who died. Most of the kids I grew up with are all dead now. Of the group of kids I grew up with, 37 of them are dead.”
In an interview with GQ this year, he upped the ante, telling the magazine: “Twelve are in jail. Four are in jail and they’re dead. I’m keeping a careful count, all 37 are dead. I come from a tough background, you know?”
