Senator Tim Scott topped the Dailymail.com poll of potential vice presidential candidates for Donald Trump.
Aides have let it be known that North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum, Sen. Marco Rubio and Sen. JD Vance are on a three-candidate shortlist, as they anticipate an announcement ahead of the Republican Party convention next week.
But the Dailymail.com poll of 1,000 likely voters puts a surprising name in the middle of the mix, with Thirteen percent say they want to see Scott, the only black Republican in the… Senateon the ticket.
Foreign policy expert Rubio is in second place with 12 percent, tied with former neurosurgeon Ben Carson, who survived four years in Trump’s Cabinet.
JL Partners asked 1,000 likely voters who they would like to see as Trump’s vice presidential candidate. The results have a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 points.
Vance, a heavy favorite among Trump’s MAGA base, is at just four percent, as is Burgum, who still has little name recognition but has reportedly gotten along well with the former president.
The top three spots remain the same when only Republican voters are considered.
Speculation about Trump’s choice reached its peak in late June, when the former president said he had already made up his mind and that his choice would likely be present in Atlanta, Georgia, for the first presidential debate.
But he and his team have remained silent since then, leaving attention focused on President Joe Biden’s poor performance and Democratic angst over whether he should even remain on the ticket.
“It could happen any time this week,” Trump campaign adviser Jason Miller said during an appearance on Fox News.
The JL Partners poll of 1,000 likely voters showed Trump had widened his lead over Biden from two to six points after the debate.
Trump is scheduled to hold a rally in Miami on Tuesday, raising questions about whether he might be about to announce one of several Florida-based candidates as his vice president, particularly Rubio.
There will also be another rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday… near Vance’s home state of Ohio.

Donald Trump Jr and conservative activist Charlie Kirk have been promoting Vance as the choice of the grassroots movement.
And pollster Kellyanne Conway has argued that Rubio would do better at attracting key demographic groups to Trump’s coalition.
“As President Trump himself has said, the primary criteria for selecting a vice president is a strong leader who will be a great president for eight years after his next four-year term concludes,” said Trump campaign senior adviser Brian Hughes.
“But anyone who tells you they know who or when President Trump will pick his vice president is lying, unless that person’s name is Donald J. Trump.”
