A tech expert has revealed why you should never leave your iPhone charging overnight – and the explicit dangers of sleeping with the device under your pillow.
Scott Polderman of the US echoed an official warning from Apple after realizing millions could be at risk of electric shock, injury or fire.
“I charge my phone overnight, and I think most people do, but the concern is actually where the phone is placed when it’s charging,” he said in a video.
‘It’s important that the phone gets ventilation – and if you have the phone next to the bed, plugged in and you fall asleep and it’s under the covers or under your pillow and it can’t get ventilation, then it can cause damage. .
“You also don’t want to have prolonged skin contact with the charging cord — especially if you’re sleeping,” he added.

Polderman warned that you shouldn’t take your phone with you to bed at all.
Apple’s official website advised: ‘Avoid prolonged skin contact with the charging cable and plug when connected to a power source, as this may cause discomfort or injury. Sleeping or sitting on the charging cable or plug should be avoided.’
The tech giants are urging customers to use ‘common sense’ to avoid situations where your skin comes into contact with a device, its power adapter or a wireless charger when it’s in operation or plugged into a power source for an extended period of time.
‘Do not sleep on a device, power adapter or wireless charger, and do not place them under a blanket, pillow or your body when it is connected to a power source.
‘Store your iPhone, power adapter and any wireless charger in a well-ventilated area when in use or charging. Be especially careful if you have a physical condition that affects your ability to sense heat against the body,” Apple said.
A few shared their experiences with their iPhones.
“I’ve burned myself falling asleep with a running iPhone before,” said one.
“I have mine on a wireless charger on my nightstand and the wireless charger has safe mode where it stops supplying power when my phone is charged,” said another.
A third revealed: ‘I accidentally left mine in bed the other night, woke up three hours later – it was under my heating pad and it was like an iron! It’s a wonder it didn’t catch fire.’
