An urgent search is underway for a father and son suspected of being swept away by rocks at a popular fishing spot.

The 47-year-old man and his 17-year-old son were last seen at around 5.30pm on Monday night after travelling to Storm Bay, south of Kiama Blowhole on the NSW south coast, at 5pm on Monday.

They had travelled from Liverpool to the well-known fishing spot and were due to return home at midnight.

The couple’s car was found along with fishing equipment and their belongings on a rocky ledge.

“We have serious concerns for their safety,” New South Wales Police Superintendent Craig Ireland said in a statement to the Illawarra Mercury.

“Conditions are pretty tough today,” Superintendent Ireland said.

The search involves officers from Lake Illawarra Police District, Marine Area Command, Police Divers, Rescue and Bomb Disposal Unit, PolAir, Marine Rescue, SES and Surf Life Saving NSW.
