A man has died after suffering a suspected drug overdose at the Pitch festival near Ararat in Victoria’s south-west.

The man in his 20s was airlifted to Melbourne’s Alfred Hospital about 4am on Sunday morning and later died at The Alfred.

The controversial festival was canceled on Sunday due to a dangerous heat wave and extreme fire danger, organizers said in a statement.

“No one is in immediate danger. We encourage everyone on site not to rush, pack your bags calmly and leave this afternoon or early tomorrow,” they said.

“Remember to stay hydrated and be patient and calm with staff and each other.”

The festival, which began on Friday and would last until Tuesday.

Two other festival attendees, men between 30 and 40 years old, were also taken to the hospital for a suspected overdose and are in stable condition.

They were taken to East Grampians Health Service in a stable condition after suspected substance use at Saturday’s festival.

Very high temperatures have also affected Melbourne, and Monday’s Moomba parade has been cancelled.

“Safety, health and wellbeing must be the top priority,” Melbourne Mayor Sally Capp said on Sunday.
