Marco Amitrano will become the new boss of accounting giant PwC

The British partners of accounting giant PwC have chosen the only man on their three-person shortlist to become their next leader.

Marco Amitrano, the firm’s director of clients and markets, was chosen ahead of his rivals Laura Hinton and Hemione Hudson.

None of the so-called big four accounting firms – which include Deloitte, EY and KPMG – have ever been led in Britain by a woman.

Italian-born Amitrano, who has worked at PwC for 32 years, will begin a four-year term in July, replacing current boss Kevin Ellis.

Ellis described his successor as “a fantastic leader, with a deep understanding of our business.”

Three-quarters of PwC UK partners are men and it has admitted that women are underrepresented in the industry. The gender pay gap at the company was 7.1 percent last year.
