It was during the second inning of Monday night’s exhibition loss to the Diablos Rojos that the terrifying incident unfolded.
The ball bounced off the handle of González’s bat directly into his face, knocking off his helmet. He was sitting upright when they took him off the field in a cart.
The Yankees said Gonzalez was treated at the stadium for a contusion to his right eye.
Team physician Dr. Carlos Smith accompanied González to the ABC Medical Center in Mexico City for further evaluation and testing.
