Called UFO MP-1766, the coin, which will qualify as legal tender, has a hidden motor that generates a magnetic field with a specially designed base that then allows it to float.

The Polish Mint has created the world’s first levitating glow-in-the-dark coin, made from seven ounces of silver, for use in Cameroon.

Called UFO MP-1766, the coin, which will qualify as legal tender, has a hidden motor that generates a magnetic field with a specially designed base that then allows it to float.

According to Lukasz Karda, director of the Technical and Production Planning Department at the Polish Mint, the glow is the result of a fluorescent paint hardened with ultraviolet light.

Created on behalf of the Bank of Cameroon, the incredible coin will be worth 1,766 Cameroonian francs (around £2.30).

But according to the Mint “its real value is significantly higher than its nominal value.”

Karda said: ‘We cannot simply create a currency that enters official circulation, because only central banks have the right to issue money.

“Therefore, there is a business model that consists of contacting somewhat exotic foreign banks, in this case the Bank of Cameroon.”

Karda continued: ‘Our currency is the result of the hard work of a large group of experts from the Polish Mint who are capable of implementing the most ambitious concepts.

‘We put the UFO in motion thanks to the engine hidden inside.

“The electromagnetic field generated between the special support and the aforementioned engine creates a kind of tunnel in which our spacecraft floats in the air.”

Karda continued: ‘The Polish Mint’s pioneering project took its creators to a completely different level in the art of coinage, both in terms of the use of modern technology and artistic vision.

‘In addition to implementing an original solution, the shape and design are also worth mentioning.

‘To better highlight the aesthetic values, digital printing and selective copper plating were used in the production process.

‘At first it seemed like a good joke, but with each passing day it became clear that we were up to the task.

“We found the right technology and it worked.”
