Darts star James Wade has given a bizarre explanation after fans claimed he farted loudly while playing a match at the Players Championship.
Images of the 41-year-old went viral on social media following his match against Callan Rydz in the quarter-finals.
Wade had taken a 6-5 victory over Rydz to take his place in the tournament’s semifinals.
He had approached a table after the win and footage showed the darts star slightly bending his knees.
Fans claimed they could later hear the sound of a fart on the video stream, and Wade was forced to take to social media to deny the claim.
Darts star James Wade has released a statement denying that he farted during a match
Wade had been seen bending his knees after a game and fans claimed to have heard a fart.
Wade took to social media to claim the noise was caused by the Velcro on his shoes.
Wade, known as ‘The Machine’, offered a strange explanation for the noise.
“I feel like I need to address a situation following my run to the PC22 semi-finals today,” Wade wrote.
‘Images have emerged of me doing what appears to be a ‘shard’ at the end of one of my matches.
“Actually, it was the Velcro on my new shoes. I’ve now settled this matter and don’t want to talk about it again.”
Fans on social media were quick to poke fun at the incident, with one claiming that they should now call him “The Wind Machine” at future events.
This is not the first time a darts star has been accused of farting during a match.
In 2018, Gary Anderson was forced to deny claims from an opponent that he had farted during a Grand Slam of Darts match, after claiming there had been a “rotten egg wind” coming from his table.
“It’ll take me two nights to get this smell out of my nose,” his opponent Wesley Harms had claimed, prompting Anderson to respond.
“If the boy thinks I farted, he’s totally wrong. I swear on the lives of my children that it wasn’t my fault,” she said.
Wade laughed off the incident after his run to the semifinals of the Players Championship.
Fans on social media were quick to joke about the incident in response to Wade’s statement.
‘I once had a stomach problem on stage and I admitted it. So I’m not going to lie about farting on stage. Every time I walked by there was a smell of rotten eggs, so that’s why I thought it was him.
“It was really bad. He smelled bad, but then he started playing better and I thought he needed to clear his head a bit. If someone did that, they should go to the doctor. It sounds like he’s saying it was me, but I admit it.”
Surprisingly, Wade’s next opponent at the Players Championship was Anderson, who finally ended his run by winning 7-4 in the semi-finals.
Anderson would go on to win the event by defeating Connor Scutt 8-4 in the final.
