Firefighters made the grim discovery of a body inside a property in what police suspect was a late-night arson attack.

The grim discovery came after fire crews were called to put out a fire in the northern Victorian town of Kerang shortly after midnight on Saturday.

Although the fire at the Lilac Avenue property was extinguished, the sole occupant inside could not be saved.
