Netflix fans were excited to learn that Ghostbusters will be finding new life as a cartoon on Netflix.

The animated series, originally announced by the streamer in 2022, was officially greenlit on Monday, according to Variety.

While exact details remain a mystery, sources told the outlet that the show will “be tonally in line” with recent films in the Ghostbusters franchise, including Afterlife and Frozen Empire.

Fans were quick to react on social media with excitement, with one user on X writing: “About time!”

Another wrote: “Animated series? Yes sir. There’s so much more to do with an animated series.”

It is not yet known whether the series will feature the new generation of Ghostbusters from the recent films or the iconic “legacy” Ghostbusters from the original 1984 film and its sequel, played by Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson. Their co-star Harold Ramis sadly passed away in 2014.

The Netflix series is expected to be animated in 3D, marking a departure from the traditional 2D animation style of the franchise’s original animated show, The Real Ghostbusters.

Elliott Kalan, known for his work on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and Mystery Science Theater 3000, has been tapped as showrunner for the upcoming Ghostbusters animated series, which has yet to receive an official title.

The show, produced by Sony Pictures Animation, will feature Ghost Corps, Inc.’s Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan returning as executive producers.

Reitman and Kenan previously co-wrote the recent Ghostbusters films: Reitman directed Afterlife and Kenan took the reins on Frozen Empire.

Following the success of the original Ghostbusters film, an animated series titled The Real Ghostbusters aired from 1986 to 1991.

In 1997, a sequel series was released, continuing the story of The Real Ghostbusters.

The latest installment of the franchise, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, hits theaters in March.

It reunited original stars Murray, Aykroyd, Hudson and Annie Potts, although it focused primarily on a new generation of Ghostbusters played by Mckenna Grace, Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard and Paul Rudd.

The iconic Ghostbusters franchise was launched with the 1984 film, also starring Sigourney Weaver.
