Geraldton assault: A German backpacker was attacked by a gang of youths in a public toilet in Bluff Point, Washington

The German tourist was left bloodied and bruised after the terrifying attack.

A gang of youths remains at large after a young German backpacker was beaten with a gardening tool in a late-night attack and attempted robbery in a coastal suburb.

The 24-year-old tourist was confronted by a group of up to five young men wearing face coverings at a toilet block in the Geraldton suburb of Bluff Point in Western Australia’s mid-west at about 10.30pm on Monday night.

The man told police the group demanded his clothes and jewelry and threatened to cut off his arm with a garden tool if he did not comply.

The tourist was assaulted and hit in the head with the gardening tool during the brief scuffle. The Geraldton Guardian reported.

The group eventually fled the scene empty-handed.

The victim suffered a large cut to his forehead and bruising that required hospital treatment.

The youths remain at large more than 24 hours later.

Police believe the group may have been in the Beresford and Bluff Point areas at the time of the incident.

Residents are urged to check their surveillance cameras, sheds and garages for stolen gardening tools.
