She has admitted that she doesn’t like the fame that comes with her success, once describing being in the spotlight as “like always having gum stuck in your hair”.

But her name has been revived in the public consciousness in recent weeks, following the tragic death of Hollywood legend and her former co-star Donald Sutherland.

The veteran Canadian actor’s death from a long illness at the age of 88 was announced by his movie star son Kiefer Sutherland last month.

And in the wake of her passing, as the world reflects on her iconic career, the debate has begun anew around one of the most controversial movie sex scenes of all time, between Donald and Julie.

The couple starred together in the 1973 thriller Don’t Look Now, in which they engaged in a passionate, nearly five-minute romance so intense that many assumed their stars weren’t acting.

In the years since, the film has faced much speculation over whether the erotic scene was immaculately choreographed to look hyper-realistic or whether the actors had actually had an on-screen encounter in real life.

In the initial promotion of the film, directed by Nicolas Roeg, it was advertised as “one of the most frank love scenes ever filmed” and became hugely controversial.

It caused problems for censors both in Britain, where it was given an X rating, and in the United States, where it was rated R, and the scene in question was completely removed by the BBC when it was first broadcast on British television.

The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) said at the time that it went beyond what it would normally approve, redefining the boundaries of how sex is shown on the big screen.

Even Julie’s own boyfriend at the time, famed actor Warren Beatty, took issue with the scene and reportedly flew to London to demand it be removed from the film, according to Michael Deeley, who oversaw the film’s UK distribution.

Rumors that the sex was genuine have persisted for years, helped by people like former Paramount executive Peter Bart, who said in his 2011 book that he had seen the filmed scene and confirmed that the actors did make love.

But Donald has categorically denied the sex was real, previously declaring that anyone who claims otherwise is “an idiot”.

Talking with him New York Daily News At the premiere of The Leisure Seeker, the Hunger Games star said she loved the scene because it “reminded her of making love.”

But he added that performing actual sex would have been impossible as no shot lasted more than 15 seconds before the action stopped so he and Julie could reposition themselves.

Although Julie also publicly said it was nothing more than “fake sex” in a 2015 interview with BBC Radio 4.

He praised Nicolas and said that the director ‘I managed to capture that extraordinary thing that happens when you’re making love.’

She added: “It was just flesh writhing and rolling and touching itself, and God, I thought it was absolutely lovely. I loved the wriggling bits and all that stuff you can’t see.”

She added that the scene captured the moment when “you know you don’t exist, the other person maybe doesn’t even exist. It’s just bodies that exist.”

“It wasn’t even necessarily sexy, which is what it was: it reminded you of making love.”
