Five Argentine tourists died after their van crashed into a parked van and killed its driver on a highway linking two Mexican resort cities.

Quintana Roo Secretary of State Cristina Torres said the group was heading out sightseeing near Tulum and Playa del Carmen on Sunday when the driver lost control of the vehicle.

The SUV skidded into the oncoming lane and collided with the van, which was parked on the shoulder of the highway near the Palladium Hotel.

The Argentine victims were identified as Hernán Sibella; Maximilian Liviano; Silvia Díaz Gerónimo Amengual and Nahuel López and declared dead at the scene.

The Quintana Roo state prosecutor’s office said preliminary investigations indicated the accident was caused by inclement weather in the area.

“It can be determined… one of the drivers lost control of the vehicle, entering the oncoming lane, causing the accident,” the attorney general’s office said in a statement.

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador instructed Quintana Roo Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa to begin efforts to help families repatriate the remains of their loved ones.

“Our Argentine brothers and a Mexican lost their lives in this accident,” López Obrador said. ‘I want the Argentine people to know that we are caring for those who unfortunately lost their lives.’

Argentine news outlet Todo Noticias reported that López had previously visited Isla Mujeres in 2022 and had been staying in Playa del Carmen for more than a year.

López’s girlfriend, Macarena Hernández, paid tribute to him with a series of heartfelt posts on her Instagram Story while asking friends and followers to donate money to help his family bring his body back to Argentina.

‘I love you with my soul. I will take you with me forever, reads Hernández’s caption in one of the publications.

The heartbroken model shared a video showing some of the couple’s special moments.

“Thank you for teaching me what love is,” he said. ‘Thank you for being part of my life and I know you will stay with me forever.’

Amengual and Díaz dated and had stayed in Playa de Carmen, where Díaz worked as a dancer and acrobat.

‘One year already living in the Caribbean. Grateful to Mexico,’ said Díaz’s last post on December 12, 2023. ‘Always accompanied by my love Gerónimo.’
