A teenager has died and two of his friends have been taken to hospital after a car crashed into a tree.

The white Ford Falcon crashed into a tree while travelling along Lemon Tree Passage Road at Salt Ash in the Hunter region of New South Wales shortly before 11pm on Friday.

Paramedics found five teenagers, aged between 14 and 17, inside the vehicle.

A teenager suffered serious injuries and died while being rushed to hospital.

Two other teenagers suffered minor injuries and were taken to John Hunter Hospital.

The remaining three teenagers were not seriously injured and the 17-year-old driver was taken to hospital for mandatory tests.

Police have cordoned off the area and the forensic accident unit is investigating.

Motorists are urged to avoid the area on Saturday and anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers.
