He is perhaps known as Australia’s most boisterous shock jock.
But Kyle Sandilands has admitted that even he didn’t have the nerve to appear on a wild daytime panel in the early 2000s.
The KIIS FM star, 52, took a trip down memory lane on Wednesday’s Kyle And Jackie O Show, recalling how she was once asked to join the cast of Beauty and the Beast, a controversial talk show known for their disputes and heated debates.
The format of Beauty and the Beast involved an outspoken and intentionally brash male host, known as the “Beast”, debating a panel of female celebrities, acting as the “Beauties”.
During Wednesday’s show, Kyle recalled an infamous moment that aired on the show in 2001 when then-host Stan Zemanek outrageously threw a book in panelist Jan Murray’s direction during a debate.

“Someone had a book and threw their own book at the woman,” Kyle told his co-host Jackie ‘O’ Henderson, 49, who admitted she had never seen the now-defunct show.
“The good old days of television,” Kyle reflected.
He then showed the clip, in which Stan could be seen admonishing Jan over his view that “aristocratic” rural farm owners were exploiting their workers by greedily taking government subsidies for themselves.

Stan disagreed, arguing that rural residents were simply lazy.
‘When was the last time you went to the countryside?’ she asked Jan, to which she quickly replied, “I live in the country.”
“In Byron Bay, where they smoke weird tobacco all the time,” Stan sneered.

“Some people do,” Jan replied, when Stan interrupted: “The only thing you see when you drive into Byron Bay is a cloud of smoke rising from the bushes!”
The conversation became increasingly heated when Jan began complaining about then-Prime Minister John Howard, whom she compared to a “little pygmy gnome”, and how his federal policies were “closing all services in the bush”.
Stan became increasingly angry as he tried, unsuccessfully, to stop her from speaking, yelling, ‘Oh, that’s it! Jan? Do you have any respect? Jan!’ before suddenly throwing a book at him.

Bewildered, Jan, visibly exhausted, exclaimed: “Don’t do that to me!”
—Do you feel any respect for anyone? Stan shouted, as Jan replied: ‘Not for a fool like you, I don’t! Don’t point your finger at me!’
‘When I talk to you, you look at me and answer my question… I told you before, I’m asking the question. Show some respect,’ Stan roared.
‘Don’t keep calling the Prime Minister a “gnome” and “Little Johnny.” “I’m sick of this… Jan, shut up,” he continued, as Jan relentlessly repeated his arguments about federal policy.

Reacting to the clip, Kyle admitted that he “didn’t have the strength to be on the show.”

Jackie, however, thought Kyle would have been perfect for Beauty and the Beast and said, “I felt like I was listening to your clone.”
He went on to speculate why Kyle turned down the invitation to become the new Beast after Stan’s death in 2007.
‘Were you doing Idol or something? What was happening with you? she asked, to which Kyle responded, “I don’t know.”
“You wouldn’t have wanted to commit to a daytime TV show,” he added.
“No, and the money wasn’t that great,” Kyle responded.
