City-bound traffic has come to a standstill on Sydney’s M5 motorway after a six-vehicle traffic jam during peak hour traffic on Thursday.

NSW Ambulance paramedics were called to the scene near Revesby, where the main highway intersects Queen Street, shortly before 6.20am following reports of a major accident involving several vehicles.

Ambulance NSW said one person was trapped in their vehicle but was now free.

No major injuries have been reported.

All three eastbound lanes are closed as tow trucks remove vehicles from the scene and drivers use the emergency lane to pass.

Westbound traffic has reopened, however, citybound traffic remains heavy 10 miles from Edmondson Park in the southwest of the city.

Motorists have been advised to use Henry Lawson Drive, Milperra Road and The River Road to rejoin the M5.

Meanwhile, several vehicles have been involved in an accident on the M4 at Greystanes.

One westbound lane is closed and traffic conditions are heavy.

More to come.
