Rip: Bronze for Beth Potter!

It’s been a busy morning with Team GB’s Beth Potter taking a bronze medal in the women’s triathlon.

The event was given the green light this morning despite concerns about water quality in the River Seine.

Potter emerged from the swim in the lead group and maintained her position in the bike, while four women were battling for the three medals in the 10km race.

Pre-race favourite Cassandre Beaugrand pushed hard to claim gold and become France’s first Olympic triathlon champion.

Potter, 32, would finish third in the race behind Switzerland’s Julie Derron, giving the British team its 13th medal of the Games.

This is not the first time this week that cyclists have suffered a fall

Some have expressed concern about the slippery conditions in Paris, when Taylor Knibb fell off her bike in the women’s time trial on Saturday.

Even his mechanic slipped on the asphalt when he came to deliver a new bike.

Team GB’s Anna Henderson later took silver in the time trial but insisted she “pedaled like a granny” through the corners to avoid slipping.

Olympic triathletes suffer a nasty fall

This is not the first time this week that we have seen cyclists fall off their bikes in the slippery conditions of Paris.

In the women’s time trial on Saturday, several riders slipped while trying to navigate quickly through the turns and one rider’s mechanic also slipped on the asphalt while trying to provide American Taylor Knibb with a new bike.

Prior to today’s women’s triathlon, it had rained overnight in the French capital, raising some concerns about the cycling leg of today’s women’s triathlon.

Several cyclists slipped and fell from their bikes during the race, and some had to retire.

GuamManami Iijima was the first athlete to suffer an accident, along with Brazilian Vittoria Lopes, German Lisa Tertsch and Belgian Jolien Vermeylen were also affected by an incident.

Lotte Miller suffered two crashes during the bike stage and the Norwegian was forced to retire later.

Germany’s Laura Lindemann crashed three laps from the end and dropped away from the chasing group.

The moment Beth Potter got bronze!

Potter gave his verdict on today’s race, adding that he tried to stay as far forward as he could to avoid crashing in the slippery conditions in Paris.

“I just tried to stay in the top five and stay at the front and mainly stay out of trouble,” Potter said speaking to BBC Sport.

“I got caught behind a couple of crashes on the bike but managed to stay upright. I was just trying to stay level-headed and not get caught out.”

There was concern earlier today that wet ground conditions in Paris could affect the cycling leg of the event, as a female rider fell off her bike during the triathlon. But Potter added that she was well prepared for the slippery conditions.

“I was saying it was going to be a dry day but obviously it was very wet. I live and train in Leeds so I’m used to those conditions and I’ve done a lot of sessions with the guys in wet conditions. I was prepared and didn’t want to make any silly mistakes and I made sure I stayed on good wheels and tried to stay as safe as possible.”

“I’ll be supporting my fellow Great Britain athletes and hope Alex (Yee) wins today.”

‘I searched deeply and found something else’

What an achievement for Team GB’s Beth Potter!

After the race, the Glasgow-born triathlete collapsed to the ground exhausted and elated at her third place in the women’s triathlon.

The Scot had already competed in the 10,000 metres in Rio in 2016 and today she won an Olympic medal in the wet conditions of the French capital.

“I’m really happy, I was going for gold but Cassandre and Julie were too good for me today, but I’m super happy to have taken bronze,” Potter told BBC Sport.

‘I’ve come a long way in eight years and I’m very happy to be here with a bronze medal.

“I did it for myself, but also for all those who have helped me for eight years and believed in me from day one. I also did it for them at home.”

‘I dug deep and found something else.
