A young woman who lives out of her car documented the overnight conditions of below-freezing temperatures during a winter night in Idaho, with wind chill and avalanche warnings in effect.
Originally from Philadelphia, Rosa has been traveling since 2017 and celebrated the sixth anniversary of moving into her car in September 2023.
In January of this year, he ended up in Idaho in search of local hot springs and found himself facing a night in his vehicle with temperatures as low as -33F.
Huddled in her car, she captured the chilling experience on camera and I shared it on YouTube.
A young woman named Rosa revealed how she survived the night in her car in Idaho, with temperatures in the double digits below zero.
For dinner, Rosa heated a pot of chili over a flame in the back of her car.
She devoured the chili with tortilla chips while in her car.
Rosa then demonstrated how she folded sleeping bags to stay warm.
He completed the cocoon of his sleeping bag with a huge blanket.
Rosa, a native of Philadelphia, lives in her car and has been traveling around the United States since 2017.
After buying food, Rosa prepared to spend the night and parked her car at a slightly higher altitude due to the threat of an avalanche.
For dinner, he heated a can of chili over a flame in the back of his car and then devoured the chili with tortilla chips.
‘I know the low tonight is around -25 degrees, but with the wind chill, they say it could get to -40 degrees. But I’m in my car, so the icy wind shouldn’t affect me. But if I tried cooking outside, I definitely would!’ she reasoned.
Then he bundled up, stuffed a stretcher into a second sleeping bag, and covered himself with a huge blanket.
“Another thing I do when it’s going to be really cold, specifically below freezing, all night long, I wake up during the night, start my car and let it warm up, just so everything doesn’t get a chance to freeze… simply because it can be very hard on the engine and the fluids and everything when it’s this cold,” he explained.
‘So I’ll wake up in a few hours to start my car and make sure everything is okay. But in the meantime I’m going to bed. Good night!’
At 2:30 am, Rosa woke up for the first time to start her car and noticed that the dashboard registered an outside temperature of -26 F.
At 6 in the morning, he woke up again; This time, the outside temperature reading was -33 F.
“My God, what the fuck,” he exclaimed.
By 6am, the temperature had dropped to a bone-chilling -33F.
In the morning, Rosa discovered that her contact lenses had frozen.
His leftover coffee had also turned into a solid block of ice.
At dawn, Rosa officially woke up and immediately noticed that “everything” in her car was frozen.
“I have to defrost my contacts,” he realized, holding up his contact case, the liquid inside frozen.
Leftover Starbucks coffee had also turned into a block of ice.
‘So much for saving my coffee for today!’ she said with a smile.
Despite the frigid temperatures, Rosa was still determined to get to the nearby hot springs.
Rosa finally found a hot spring the next day, changing locations after determining that it was too cold in the first one she wanted to visit.
She spent the afternoon soaking in the naturally heated water, surrounded by the Idaho wilderness.
‘When it comes to snow and winter, I guess you just have to get used to changing your plans… And that’s part of the fun, right?’ she said
But soon after arriving there he quickly realized: “I think I’m coming to the conclusion that it’s too cold for these hot springs.”
‘The thing is, I’m not worried about going in; Obviously, the hot springs are hot enough; “I’m worried about having to go out,” he explained.
“Breathing hurts a little,” he admitted as he walked back to his car.
She finally drove to another two hours away and enjoyed an afternoon in a naturally heated outdoor hot tub, surrounded by ice and snow in the Idaho wilderness.
“When it comes to snow and winter, I guess you just have to get used to changing your plans,” he said. ‘And that’s part of the fun, right?’
