A major Westpac technology outage has caused the app and online banking to stop working for thousands of Australians, leaving them unable to access their money.

Westpac and St George have suffered outages for the third day in a row.

Bank customers have been left furious this week after repeated outages prevented them from using internet banking or the Westpac and St George apps.

Many have complained that they have not been able to access their money as both banks try to reassure customers that they are fixing the problem.

‘Westpac is down for the third day in a row. It’s really not good enough. Their job is to facilitate the payment system and there seems to be a system failure here. People cannot access their funds, buy food, pay their staff, etc. Please help!’ one person wrote in X.

‘Is this the third time? How many more times? I’m thinking about changing banks after being a customer for 20 years. “It can’t last longer like this,” said another.

Westpac apologized for the third time this week to the customer.

‘We are aware that customers are experiencing more problems accessing mobile and online banking. Our teams are currently working to resolve the issue. “We apologize for the inconvenience and will continue to share updates here,” a spokesperson said.

St George has issued the same statement.

The problems with both banks were resolved on Monday and Tuesday, but the problem occurred again on Wednesday.

As of 8am on Wednesday, almost 1,700 complaints about Westpac were submitted to Downdetector.

For St George, that number rose to 270 complaints on Wednesday morning.

Thousands of Westpac and St George customers reported the same issues on Monday and Tuesday.

The reason for the cuts is still unknown.

It comes just days after Westpac ended cardless cash withdrawals, forcing customers to use a physical bank card to withdraw money from an ATM.

“As part of the ongoing review of our products and services, Westpac will no longer offer cardless cash withdrawal functionality,” Westpac announced.

The bank said the change was part of an ongoing review of its “products and services.”

It highlighted that customers will still be able to make cash withdrawals at Westpac ATMs across Australia as long as they use their physical card, and cash transactions will also be possible at branches across the country.

Westpac also confirmed that cardless cash deposits would still be available to customers.
